LIST OF IMPORTANT AMENDMENTS OF THE INDIAN CONSTITUTION

List of Important Amendments of the Indian Constitution

First Amendment in 1951-
This Act Added special provision for the progression of socially and educationally backward classes or for the SC and the STs.  This added three more grounds on  freedom of speech and expression. 9th schedule is added to protect land reform and  other laws include from judicial review. These laws are based upon property rights, freedom of speech and equality before law.


Seventh Amendment in 1956-
Reconstruction of states on linguistic lines and abolition of Class A, B, C, D states and introduced of Union Territories.


Eighth Amendment in 1960-
This Amendment extended special provisions for reservation of SC, ST and Anglo Indians in Lok Sabha and legislatives.


Ninth Amendment in 1960-
Minor adjustments to territory of Indian Union following an agreement with Pakistan to settle disputes by separation of border villages, etc.


Twelfth Amendment in 1961-
Following to acquisition from Portugal, Incorporation of Goa, Daman and Diu as a Union Territory


Fifteenth Amendment in 1963-
Retirement age of High court judges raised from 60 to 62 and other minor amendments made for rationalizing explanation of rules regarding judges etc.

Twentieth Amendment in 1966-
Assure & validate judgments, decrees, orders and sentences which are passed by the judges and to validate appointments, posting, promotions and transfer of judges excepting a few who were not eligible for appointment under the article 233.


Twenty Fourth Amendment in 1971-
Enable parliament to amend any part of constitution including fundamental rights.


Thirty First Amendment in 1973-
Increase size of Parliament from 525 to 545 seats. Limit of upper representatives of the states increased from 500 to 525 and Union Territories lowered from 25 to 20.


Thirty Eighth Amendment in 1975-
Increases the powers of President and Governors to pass ordinances. 


Forty Second Amendment in 1985-
Amendment passed by Indira Gandhi during internal emergency. Provides for restriction on fundamental rights and imposes fundamental duties and changes to the basic structure of the constitution by creating India a "Socialist Secular" Republic.


Sixty First Amendment in 1989-
Reduced the voting age from 21 to 18.


Seventy Third Amendment in 1992-
Legal provisions for Panchayat Raj was made as third level of administration in villages.

Seventy Fourth Amendment in 1992-
Legal provisions for Local Administrative bodies as third level of administration in urban areas such as cities and towns.



Eighty Sixth Amendment in 2002-
Provides Right to Education until the age of 14 and Early childhood care until the age of 6.


Eighty Seventh Amendment in 2003-
Extend the usage of 2001 national census population figures for distribution of parliamentary seats in state wise.


Ninety First Amendment in 2004-
Restrict the size of council of ministers to fifteen percent of legislative members & strengthen Anti Defection laws.



Ninety Third Amendment in 2006-
Enable 27% reservation for other backward classes (OBC) in government and private educational institutions.


Ninety Ninth Amendment in 2014-
Formation of National Judicial appointment commission.

101th Amendment in 2016-
Goods and Services Tax Bill
