Introduction-

Mahatma Gandhi considered by many the father of the Indian independence movement. He worked diligently using his concept of Satyagraha to end the British rule in India as well as to improve lives of Indians.

 

Early Life-

·       -Full name- Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi.

·       -Born- On 2nd October 1869, Porbandar Gujrat.

·       -Married- Kasturba in an arranged marriage when he was 13 years old.

·       -Son- Four( Harilal, Manilal, Ramdas and Devdas.

·       -In the year 1888, Mahatma Gandhi left for London to study law.

 

Role in Indian Independence Movement-

His first major achievements were in 1918 when he led the champaran and kheda agitations of Bihar and Gujrat. He also led non-cooperation movement and Quit India movement against the British rule.

 

Literary Works-

  • Hind Swaraj, published in Gujarati in 1909.
  • He edited several newspapers which included Harijan in Gujrati, Hindi and English, Indian Opinion, Young India in English and Navajivan.
  • His Autobiographies: My experiments with truth, Satyagraha in South Africa and Hind Swaraj.

 

Honour-

  • In 1930, Gandhi Ji was named man of the year by Time magazine.
  • In 2011, Time Magazine named Gandhi Ji as one of the 25 political icons of all time.
  • He did not receive the Nobel Peace Prize despite being nominated five times between 1937 and 1948.
  • The Government of India institutionalized the annual Gandhi Peace Prize to distinguished social workers, world leaders and citizens. Nelson Mandela, The Leader of South Africa was recipient of the award.

  •  Gandhi Ji’s Mother tongue was Gujarati.
  •  He did his schooling from Alfred High School, Rajkot.
  • His birthday is commemorated world-wide as International Day of Nonviolence.
  • He was the youngest child of his parents. He had two brothers and one sister.
  • Gandhi Ji’s father was Hindu by Religion and Modh baniya by Caste.
  • Mahadev Deasai was Gandhi Ji’s Personal Secretary.
  • Gandhi Ji was assassinated in the Garden of The formal Birla house.
  • Gandhi Ji and Famous Leo Tolstoy interacted with each other through letters.
  • Gandhi Ji setup a small colony, Tolstoy farm at an 1100 acre site, 21 miles from Johannesburg, South Africa for his colleagues in the Satyagraha struggle.
